If you’ve ever been to Gold’s Gym, you know they have some pretty impressive treadmills. However, the treadmills you run on at the gym are certainly not the treadmills that they sell. Their line is focused on inexpensive home treadmills, rather than bulky club treads. Their products stay pretty much static. They don’t have many changes in prices or new products very often. You can probably count on these being here for a while.

The Golds Gym Trainer 550 is one of the cheapest treadmills I’ve reviewed. While I would generally say to stay clear of treadmills this cheap, for some people this may be the only option. So I figured I would review some of these as well. The disadvantages to having a budget treadmill are the same as buying a budget anything. It’s a risk that you may end up spending more in repairs than you would have had you bought a more expensive one in the first place.

However, the Gold’s Gym line of budget treadmills exceeds that of most other budget lines. The quality in these machines, while still budget quality, is up a class in my opinion. The specs of this treadmill in particular are especially impressive for the price.

The Motor is a 2.75 HP Motor that can go up to 10 MPH. For most runners this will suffice. If you’re under the 275 lb weight capacity, and don’t do anything crazy on it, you shouldn’t have problems. The belt is a bit light, so you may need to replace it eventually, but belts aren’t a big expense to replace. The Deck and Frame aren’t mentioned in the warranty, so you may want to be careful of that. The warranty says a lot about what manufacturing companies expect from their treadmills. Just don’t jump up and down on the deck because sometimes they can crack.

The running belt is 18″ wide and 52″ long. A bit smaller than the standard 20″ x 60″. There is a workout fan, a bit of cushioning, a heart rate monitor, Ipod/MP3 Music Port with speakers, and a bunch of built in workouts. So it has some features and functionality to make things a bit more comfortable and entertaining.

Again, if you’re going to invest in a treadmill at this price, make sure to be careful with it and maintain it well. If you do, it should work for you. The warranty lasts for 90 days on parts and labor, and for 10 years on the motor.
