Today we are going to cover the idea behind this entire site: is using a treadmill worth your time? Just as with any workout routine, you don’t want to be doing the exact same thing every single day. This is because no workout is perfect! Your body needs a balance of strength training and aerobic exercise. Running on a treadmill is a great aerobic exercise to balance out your weight lifting sessions. So let’s cover the bad and the good about treadmills.
The Bad
Treadmill running can put a lot of stress on your knees. If your knees are bad to begin with, then you might want to consider water aerobics instead. But if your knees are in great shape, then you shouldn’t have any problems with treadmill running.
Using a treadmill also requires a certain amount of balance. If you frequently experience vertigo or are clumsy by nature, then a treadmill might not be your safest choice. I would recommend supervision while using it! However if you have adequate balance, then a treadmill is more likely to help you improve it.
The belt is propelling your legs, so you aren’t working as hard. This means you aren’t burning as many calories, so you’ll have to run longer than outdoor running to get an effective workout.
The Good
Running on a treadmill will tone your legs. All of that hard work makes them make the fat melt right off!
It’s also great for toning your buttocks. Again, it’s all of that movement that makes the body more tone and refined.
The surface of a treadmill is more forgiving than pounding on the asphalt or concrete. Because of this, a treadmill is easier on your joints.
If you live in a scary neighborhood, then running on an indoor treadmill allows you to reap the benefits of running without endangering yourself by leaving the house alone. Being indoors also allows the treadmill to be available in all types of weather.
You can customize your workout by adjusting the incline and speed. Most treadmills also come with programs that help you to push yourself and get a great workout.
The dashboard of the treadmill keeps track of how far you’ve run, now many calories you burned, and the amount of time it took you. This helps you to monitor your progress better.

Did you know that treadmills are thought to be the most dangerous of all exercise equipment? Well, according to this article, they are. Perhaps this is due to the fact that more than 50 million Americans use them as part of their exercise routine. Obviously injuries are going to occur when so many people are using these large machines, but we can take steps to avoid these injuries. Some of my suggestions may be common sense, but you wouldn’t believe how many people get hurt while on treadmills just because they aren’t using caution, and they think “Oh, this won’t happen to me!” So pay attention so you don’t end up killing yourself for simply trying to stay healthy.
First, while running, don’t ever get off of the treadmill while the belt is still running. I know it is tempting to just jump off while it’s still going, but don’t do it. I have actually injured myself before trying to do this one. Using the handlebars, I boosted myself up, and then tried to jump off to the side, but I didn’t jump up quite high enough and my foot hit the belt and I wound up on the floor. Luckily I only had a bruised hip, but I have heard of accidents happening when people try to get off while the belt is moving, and they weren’t so lucky. It’s definitely not worth a trip to the hospital.
Second, focus on what you are doing. It is extremely easy to be distracted while you are running, and mis-steps are common. If your foot lands half on the belt, half off, you could easily end up sprawled on the floor with tread marks on your forehead. Sprained ankles are also a horrible consequence of not paying attention. I have had 2 ankle surgeries due to ankle sprains, and trust me, you don’t want to go through that.
Third, don’t be dumb. Sorry folks, but if you know nothing about electronics and you are trying to fix your machine by yourself by opening it up to do the mechanics inside the motor, that probably isn’t the smartest idea. Another stupid idea is running at a very high speed without attaching the safety key to yourself. I could list a million common sense ideas to follow as you are using your treadmill, but that would take all day. Just read your owners manual, and actually pay attention to all of the warnings found there, and you will be a lot better off because you did. It may even save you from paying a lot of expensive medical bills.
Just remember that a treadmill is a large piece of equipment that can help you out if used correctly, but if used incorrectly, you could be injured. Take the steps today to ensure that you don’t have a future injury while working out!
These are two very good treadmills that are great at their main function: that is incline training. As we all know, incline training can help you burn as little as 5-times the calories that you would if you were running on a normal, flat surface; and when there is a treadmill that comes out with the main focus being incline training… oh boy, watch out!
The NordicTrack X9i is just the ultimate power house machine. It’s built to last with a 3.0CHP motor; the belt is 20″ x 62″; it possess reflex cushioning, to make it less of an impact on your joints. This treadmill has an incline range of -6-40% that can be controlled by the touch of a button. The speed can go from 0-12MPH and can also be controlled with the touch of a button. The X9i has 44 different workout apps so you can get the most specific workout. It also comes with iFit Live technology built-in so you don’t need to buy the extra component like you would have to on other treadmills. Perhaps the coolest part of this treadmill is that the display is actually a built-in Android powered browsing tablet.
The XT90 is a different story though. Though the XT90 is not quite the same as NordicTrack’s X9i. The Proform XT90 only has 2 preset inclines. You have to manually set the incline to 10% or 20%. The belt is 18″ by 55″ and is made of quality material capable of lasting a long time. It’s only got a 2.0 CHP motor, and will hold up to 350 lbs. It can reach a speed of 10 MPH. It has 20 programmed workouts, with a nice back-lit display. The coolest part of this treadmill is the ProShox technology. It is literally two shocks that you can set to control the intensity of your workout. This treadmill also supports iFit Live.
You’re probably thinking how someone could pit these two treadmills together. They are pretty different. So the decision is based off of how much you get for your money. The X9i is advertised as $1,999 and the XT90 runs at around $899. So which one is a better deal? I would have to go with the NordicTrack. The X9i is pretty expensive, but with all of those features, it balances out. This treadmill is awesome if you have the money. Make no mistake, the ProForm treadmill is a great deal for $899, it’s a decent incline trainer and perfect for those who are on a budget.
