Smooth 9.45ST compared to Proform Performance 900

Today for our tournament we’ve got the Smooth 9.45 ST put up against the Proform Pro 2500. Two great treadmills.

Okay, today, our treadmills are actually not in the price range they’re put in. Their prices fluctuate a bit sometimes, so sometimes they’ll be in the $2000 – $3000 price, but right now they’re $1000 – $2000 price. However, their quality has earned them a place in the high price range so that’s where they’ll be at if they make the best buys.

Anyway, The Smooth 9.45 ST is currently $1,899 and the Proform Performance 900 is $1,999. The motors are the same size at 3.0 CHP. Generally it’s easy and common to find treadmills with 3.5 or even 4 CHP in this price range, so the motor sizes aren’t completely impressive. Smooth, however, has a reputation of high quality motors, and this motor in particular seems perfectly built and balanced. It’s extra quiet, and has all the power you would need for anyone under 400 lbs. A bigger motor does, generally make a motor more durable, and keeps it from heating up and letting the RMPs speed up, but if the motor is built well enough, the quality can make up for the size, and in this case it does. The Proform on the other hand, has a decent, but much more average motor.

The Smooth has a 400 lb weight limit. This is due somewhat to the power and quality of the motor, and also the strong frame and deck. The frame is all welded steel which keeps it from shaking and rattling, and the deck is just super strong. The deck and belt and all the other parts are included in the lifetime parts warranty. This lifetime parts warranty is awesome. Generally you can expect parts to start wearing out after a few years, and with most brands you just have to plan to buy new ones, but with Smooth, you get them free. Lifetime parts warranty is a huge selling point. The Proform Performance 900 has a 350 lb weight limit, which is more standard and average. Their deck is included in their parts warranty which lasts 3 years. So if it breaks or cracks after that you’ll just have to buy a new one.

Both have a full sized 20″ x 60″ treadbelt and a good multi-ply belt thickness. Neither of them have very extravagant consoles. They both use LED displays. The Proform has Ifit Live which is a huge plus. It’s not built in, so you’ll have to get it separate, but at least it supports it. I wish smooth did this, but they haven’t caught onto Ifit Live. Proform shows you numbers in big LED lights, and the Smooth has a large screen that shows a lot of stuff, and then several little screens that show your numbers. As far as the look and user-friendliness, the Proform’s console is better designed, and it has more programs. Both have a built in Music port with Speakers.

With the unbeatable warranty of Smooth, the better motor, strength, and overall quality, the Smooth 9.45 ST easily takes the lead over the Proform Performance 900. The few extra features of the Proform are nice, but they don’t make up for all that the Smooth has to Offer. So that wraps it up. The Smooth 9.45 ST Wins!
